Uber shut down its operations in Nigeria and Uganda on 2 September 2026. In Nigeria, the company had been active for more than twelve years: it launched its service in Lagos in 2014.

The group says the decision only affects these two countries and that it is supporting drivers and riders through the transition. Its help centre remained available in both countries until 23 September.

An African retreat

It is another withdrawal from the continent: Uber left Tanzania in February 2026 and Côte d’Ivoire in 2025. It now operates only in South Africa, Egypt, Ghana and Kenya. The news came on the day the group announced 3,300 job cuts worldwide, about 10% of its workforce.
