GTA 6: Rockstar reveals a new side of Jason and Lucia
A few weeks before GTA 6 comes out, Rockstar is starting to talk more about what happens beyond the shoot-outs and car chases. A new interview published around LOVE Magazine sheds light on Jason and Lucia, and above all on how Rockstar wants to tell their story.
- Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos are not simply the two characters players will control in GTA 6. Rockstar explains that it wanted to give them different personalities, flaws, ambitions and a real capacity to grow together.
Rockstar wants imperfect characters
This is probably one of the most interesting aspects of the new information. Rockstar’s writers explain that they wanted to avoid characters who were too polished. Jason and Lucia can be tough, vulnerable, right or wrong. Above all, they need to be able to learn from each other. This gives their relationship another dimension. Their story is not just built on the traditional duo of criminals pulling off one heist after another. Rockstar is instead trying to build two people with their own motivations, who change through contact with each other. Lucia in particular seems to be the more determined of the two. Jason, for his part, is presented as someone more reactive, more influenced by the events around him. This contrast should play an important role as the story unfolds.
A crime story, but also a story of survival
The starting point is still very much GTA, though. Jason and Lucia are dragged into a criminal conspiracy after an “easy score” goes wrong. Caught in a situation that is beyond them, they have to rely on each other to get out of it. Rockstar also describes their dream as something much simpler than the excesses usually associated with GTA: owning a home, securing their family’s future and getting out of debt. It is precisely this contrast that could give the new adventure its identity: characters looking for a more stable life in a world that seems constantly determined to drag them back into crime.
And Leonida will still be completely crazy
Don’t expect GTA to have suddenly turned serious, though. Rockstar remains true to the series’ DNA. In the narrative team’s new comments, the studio explains that if it wants to depict the contemporary world, it also has to exaggerate its flaws. Absurd adverts, dialogue, media, social behaviour: GTA 6 is meant to take recognisable elements of our times and push them far enough to become ridiculous. The aim, then, is not just to reproduce present-day Florida. Leonida is meant to be a distorted version of it, more excessive and more grotesque.
Satire that has to stand the test of time
This is a particularly interesting question for Rockstar. A GTA game takes several years to develop. A joke based on a political figure, a meme or an internet trend can quickly become incomprehensible. The studio therefore says it prefers more lasting themes rather than simply reproducing the news of the moment. It is an important nuance: GTA 6 is not necessarily trying to be funny by copying the internet of 2026. Rockstar instead wants to mock social mechanisms that should still be recognisable several years after the game’s release.
More than just a new GTA?
That is probably the message this new information is trying to get across. Since GTA 6 was unveiled, Rockstar has shown a lot of its landscapes, vehicles, supporting characters and open world. This time, the studio is putting more emphasis on what happens between Jason and Lucia. And that may be where GTA 6’s real gamble lies. The world of Leonida will obviously have to impress. But after years of waiting, players will not just be discovering a new map: they will need to want to follow two characters throughout their adventure. Rockstar therefore seems to want to evolve the formula without giving up what makes GTA: a gigantic world, excess, violence, humour and a good dose of satire.
- GTA, Vandal.
