Tesla Semi: ten years after it was announced, the electric truck has its factory
Announced in 2017 and promised for 2019, Tesla’s electric truck now has a dedicated factory in Reno, Nevada. The stated goal: up to 50,000 trucks a year. Charging remains the weak point.
- Tesla’s Semi, announced in 2017, has its dedicated factory in Reno, Nevada.
- More than 800 km of range, just under $300,000, up to 50,000 trucks a year targeted.
- Truck charging remains the main obstacle.
On Thursday 24 September 2026, at a new factory dedicated to the model, Tesla presented the final version of its Semi electric truck. The vehicle was unveiled in 2017, with production promised for 2019. The pandemic, the chip shortage and design changes pushed the timetable back by several years.
What was announced
- More than 800 kilometres of range on a full charge (500 miles).
- A price of just under $300,000 before public incentives.
- About 450 kilos lighter than the first model.
- A dedicated factory in Reno, Nevada, designed to produce up to 50,000 trucks a year, with 3,000 jobs announced.
The obstacle: charging
An electric truck is only as good as its chargers. Tesla is building a network of very high-power chargers, able to take the battery from 3% to 60% in about thirty minutes, but the network remains limited. Elon Musk, absent from the event, promised in a video partially automated driving features in the near future.
